YOGA

What Is Yoga?

Yoga is an ancient practice which originated in India over 5000 years ago, to address physical, mental and spiritual development.

Modern yoga classes normally consist of physical postures and breathing techniques. Yoga is practiced to bring about the understanding and complete mastery of the mind and body. The word yoga, from the Sanskrit word yuj, means “to unite”. The ancient yogis practiced meditation to unite their inner spirit with the spirit of universe. All the yoga postures we do in a class were originally devised to make body supple and free from pains, to allow one sit still comfortably whilst meditating.

It Is Good For You!

Yoga promotes health and happiness by working on the mind and body through physical postures, breathing exercises, and meditation. It is not a religion but is compatible with all faiths. Yoga is very practical. The postures (asanas) stretch muscles and joints, and help develop strength and stamina. Yoga improves circulation, balance and posture, and has a wide range of therapeutic benefits. It can boost your energy levels, relieve stress, calm the mind and nervous system and improve the efficiency of bodily systems, and help to shed excess weight. Regular practise makes you supple, stronger and relaxed, and promotes health and well-being.

Most importantly, Yoga is really fun and can be truly addictive!

What Do I Need To Begin?

All you need is to come along with an open mind and a little bit of curiosity! Your teacher has a yoga mat available for you, or you can bring your own. Wear comfortable clothes that do not restrict your movements or breathing. Yoga is always done barefoot.

I Am Not Flexible - Can I Do Yoga?

Yes! You are the perfect candidate for yoga. Yoga is for everyone, regardless of your age, sex, or physical limitations. Come as you are and you will find that yoga will help you become stronger and more flexible. The students are guided to work safely up to their own ability in the postures, with adjustments given as required according to their individual needs.

Safety Precautions

It is best to wait approximately 2 hours after eating before practicing yoga. Allow your body to digest and eliminate foods. Yoga is not competitive. Work within your limits and never force yourself into posture. Be sure to let your teacher know before a class, if you have any form of injury or serious illness, or if you are pregnant of have recently had a baby.
